Countertop sneak peek and a little story

I'm still playing around with my tiles and I thought I'd give you a little glimpse at the countertops without the bad photoshop tiles this time.

I'm not going to bore you to death with tiles again though, ok? Just stick with me.

I was playing with the idea of using the small marble squares at first.

And I also really love these glass tiles from Lowes that look like ice cubes but the price was a bit too much and I don't want to go too shiny because then you can see every finger print again. I couldn't picture myself cleaning a shiny glass backsplash all the time. Nope!

Aren't they pretty?
Lilly said our kitchen would look like the ice queen's palace which in her mind is a very good thing.
I love the mind of a 6 year old. Everything is a fairy tale.

So lets rather look at some photos.

I picked Quartz Master Galaxies. If you are local then you can check out Zumrut Marble & Granite, because that is who put it in for me. And guess what? They cut the marble in the garage for me too that I mentioned at the end of this post. I still need to remove stains, seal it and make a decision about sink options for the powder room. There is no rush there because I'm kind of broke right now. But the owner told me that he would drill the hole for me too when I finally have my sink. Awesome, right?

The backsplash tiles aren't attached yet.
I just stacked them against the wall.

And this is what I was talking about in my tile post (click here). I can't see myself going up higher on the left side.

And the chandelier from the hallway isn't staying there either, I was just playing around. As a matter of fact I ordered a different shade. Which is hopefully coming next week.

Are you wondering what's up with that gnome and my (ever moving) brass apple?

Well here is a little story for you:

The people from my hometown of Lohr am Main, Germany believe that Snow White was from Lohr.

I'm not kidding.

Here is what was researched by a local pharmacist (whom I actually know, haha) several years ago:

After looking into the fairytale's details, he came away convinced that the Brothers Grimm had Lohr in mind when they published their story. The men who worked the mines in the surrounding hills were mostly of short stature and Lohr was a town known for its mirror manufacturers.
There is actually a mirror hanging in the "Spessart" museum that has a similar inscription to "mirror, mirror on the wall..."

And here it is, Lilly loves taking pictures with it every year when we go.

And on top of it there was even a young baroness from Lohr who, in the mid-18th century, fought with a  stepmother and eventually had to flee into the woods.

You can even read up about it on wikipedia.

Well there we go, that's better!

So there's that, the meaning of the gnome and the apple for me. A little bit of Snow White for me and my baby girl. Cool right? I went from countertops to fairy tales, haha!

And if you forgot what they looked like before then here is a picture:

The stupid half wall and the old laminate countertops.
If you want to see how I cut the wall down and more
photos then click HERE.

Anyway, I keep looking at my new countertops and I love them. Now I need to make the right decision so I will love the backsplash just as much.

There is so much more to do yet. Like building out the cabinet on the side. Trim work and molding under the counter. And tiling of course. But I have friends coming in over the weekend, so I'm not planning on getting anything done besides hanging out with great friends.

Have a great weekend web-friends.

  2. Hi, Julia :) I am loving your kitchen remodel. Will you just come do mine, I can't make decisions on it!? I am putting it on hold because I don't want to make a decision in haste. That is so interesting about Snow White. They say Grimm's stories on based on some fact, maybe that's true. I would love to visit Germany one day. Most of my family is descended from there (my side, not the hubs). xo Kristin

    1. It is a totally stressful time to decide with what to do. I think I lost several weeks of sleep over this.
You should visit Germany. I can only recommend it ;)

  7. Your countertops are gorgeous! I love the color you chose and Lily's right on thinking they look like fairy dust! I like the marble subway tiles for the backsplash. The gray and white veining ties in with your wall color and cabinetry and the rest of your house actually! Good luck on the decision making process :)
