Jewelry as Inspiration for furniture

How was your weekend? Same old, same old over here. Lots and lots of wrestling and a sore back from sitting on bleachers for hours on Saturday and Sunday. And my poor boy hasn't been doing good with his matches. He keeps complaining about nervousness and it shows in his performance. I feel terrible for him since I have struggled with anxiety my whole life and I don't want him to go through the same thing.

Well, lets talk about something else.

When I want to change things in my home, a lot of times I look for inspiration in jewelry.
I bought a bracelet at forever21 three weeks ago, yes you heard right, I'm talking about forever21 at age 37ish, but I really love their fashion jewelry. It's trendy and cheap and I can still wear it unlike most of their clothes. Stop! I totally can, at least that's what I tell myself and I'm not ready to give that up yet, ok? (IN MY HEAD I'M GOING TO BE FOREVER 21)

This makes me think of a couple of funny incidents with my kids.
For example I had this moment with my daughter in Germany this summer when I tried on a pair of really trendy shoes in a boutique. There was my little 5 year old with that strange serious look on her face, her arms crossed over her chest and guess what she told me? Ha, she said: "Mommy, those shoes don't look good on you, they are for teenagers!"
Wow, reality check! Those little creatures are brutally honest, aren't they? Everybody in the store, even though they were German, laughed. They knew exactly what she was talking about. And of course she was right.

The things my kids have said to me over the years were true, honest and hilarious:
  • My son asked me at age 3 when I was pregnant why not only my stomach is getting big but my butt too? TRUE but I didn't really want to hear it at all.
  • My daughter asked me what all the dimples were in my legs and butt. AND she asked me why my boobs looked like they were hanging down. I'm SOOOO not lying. I told her it's because they ARE hanging down. I didn't even know what to reply about the dimples.
  • My daughter asked me why I had all those lines in my face and if I was going to die soon. (OMG)
  • My son (honestly) told me that I looked like a zombie without my make-up on. (He better step up his game with the ladies when he gets older. LOL)

I went from jewlery inspirations to this?

Well anyway, you can (I guess) at any age look for inspiration for your home in jewlery, right?

Here is the bracelet I was talking about and it ended up being the inspiration for my "cursed corner" brass shelf.

The two following bracelets are in similar style and I'm using them as inspirations for some smaller projects on the shelf.

I'm almost done with that darn corner. Here are some cell phone photo sneak peaks. They show the finishes that I have been experimenting with.

Not so good!

(UPDATE: you can see how the shelf turned out here)
What have you used for inspiration lately and have your kids ever said anything brutaly honest to you? Come on, please don't tell me that I'm the only mom out there who's kids talk about the hurtful reality!!!!!        (My hubby told me that he can't believe I'm sharing this on my blog)

Pretty please, do tell!

  1. Hey! I also had problems with the splotchy finish of rub 'n buff on a project last year...I ended up diluting it with deglosser and painting it on, and got much better results (I found the tip here: http://renewredo.blogspot.com/2012/01/rub-n-buff-tips-and-tricks.html ).

    1. Thanks Sara, I tried that too. I've been following Sammy for a while. I love her RubN Buff tutorials.
I've been waiting for a new post from her. Maybe her ears will start ringing when we talk about her ;)

    2. Oh she also mentioned that she's had a hard time with RubN Buff on the yellow 80s brass. I'll hopefully share what I did on Wednesday.

    3. Oh good, I'm glad you have talked to her, because she seems to be THE go-to girl for rub 'n buff projects. I can't wait to see the final results later this week!

  2. I know Sammy has been MIA!

Anyway, I love the bracelet and I can't wait to see how it turns out! Your kids are hilarious. I feel like I need to start bracing myself for those questions (they're 3 and 16 months right now).

  3. I am not a mom, but my friends very little kids (years ago) have said some things to me (they used to beg to come stay with me) and it was not so much the statements, but the questions...... and don't you just LOVE the "why" one? Over and over and over again? It took me years, but I finally figured out the why was just one way they show their disapproval of the conversation topic.

  6. Funny post! :) Mine are still a little too young for the brutal honesty, and my husband keeps telling my two-year-old that mommy is the most beeeeautiful woman in the world (HA!), so I'm going to enjoy this time before he can think for himself and know how wrong his daddy is. :) Anyway, I love the idea to use jewelry as home decorating inspiration! Can't wait to see what you cook up!

    1. Thanks Kelly. I do have to say though that they also still say really really sweet things at times. Things that make my heart melt :)
And it's so nice of your husband to say that you are the most beautiful woman in the world.

  9. Love your blog! Also, thanks for turning me on to the accessories dept at Forever21! As someone who is about to turn 44, I never would have thought to go in there, but WOW, there were some really cute finds - and SO inexpensive! It was a real treat.
