I love the Ikea Margareta Wood too. It would look great in a faux fireplace, wouldn't it?
This is what you'll need:
• four 2x2x8 furring strips for $6.88 (2 cuts at 50" length, 2 cuts at 72" length)
• 2 yards of Ikea Margareta (pine tree) fabric for $13.98
• 1 pack (8 screws) 2 1/2" wood screws for $1.18
• stapler and staples
• ornament hooks
• ornaments
• If you'd like to add lights to the canvas, you can buy 14" inch grommets (or whatever fits your bulbs), attach them to the fabric where you want the lights and stick the bulbs from a white light garland through the grommet. I opted for no lights since I want my chandelier to be the lighting focal point and another reason is that the grommets were on the pricey side. It sure would look stunning to have the canvas lit!
You could also make an advent calendar! There are so many possibilities!

I predrilled the holes and put the frame together with 2 screws for each connection.
![]() |
Then I stapled the fabric really tight to the frame. Make sure to keep it even, so the tree looks straight.
![]() |
I bent the hook from the right side into the hook that you can see on the left side, to be able to just push them into the fabric and hang the ornaments.

Lite weight ornaments work best and that's why I used these ornaments from an old Ikea garland.

I just pushed the hooks into the fabric with the ornaments on it.

FINISHED
Do you notice something else? I hope so! Haha!
I changed out the crystals on my cellula chandelier.

Look, I can see myself in the ornament :)
What do you think? I have to take some more pictures when it is dark outside because the chandelier looks beautiful. At least that's what I think.
Have a great weekend. I hope I'll be done with another exciting project by Monday.
Happy Friday und guten Tag!

Beautiful! What a great idea for that tree, would work perfectly for my daughter who just started crawling and I'm sure will want to pull down the whole tree this year :) And that light fixture, how clever! Everything looks great!
ReplyDeleteThanks! I'm sure this fabric will be very popular this Christmas
Deletei LOVE this, julia! what a great idea! especially for apartment dwellers or people who don't have the room for a tree. how cool- the light is awesome, too!
ReplyDeleteThanks. I also thought that it would be great for apartment dwellers.

DeleteAmazing! Simply amazing. What a great idea for people who don't have room for a full tree! Oh and your chandelier is great too! :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Caitlin. I certainly have room for a tree. I think I have 5 or 6 every year, lol, plus this canvas tree now. I know, I overdo Christmas.
DeleteOMG! I love this idea! I so want to do this now. You never cease to amaze.

ReplyDeleteGORGEOUS, Julia! What a cute idea! The canvas tree by itself if fabulous but adding ornaments is awesome! I love it! Your chandelier is soooo pretty too! Beautiful job! Thank you so much for sharing! I'm going to include this in this week's highlights. ;)
ReplyDeleteThanks Roeshel! You are the sweetest!
DeleteWhat a FAB idea!! I love the lighting too!!
ReplyDeleteThank you so much!
DeleteVery nice, but i have a question. Maybe i'm just a little confused. 6 screws for 4 connections?
ReplyDeleteTHX
OMG, lol...you are right! I meant to say 8! I'll change it. All these people and nobody caught the mistake.
DeleteThanks ;)
No problem. Will definetely try tu build this beautiful piece!
DeleteThanks and good luck with your project!
DeleteYou are so clever! I can't believe that I walked right past this fabric last week at Ikea! Boo hoo, me. I can now officially claim how ripped off we Aussies are, by comparison, by Ikea! Holey Moley...one metre here sets us back by AU$9.99, whereas it only costs you guys US$13.99 for TWO yards!!! And the friggin' stuff comes from Indonesia - just around the corner. No wonder the fight for Aussie justice with Ikea goes on. I guess it's down to population numbers to keep the costs down. (Place another boo hoo here!) Anyhoo, I totally heart what you've done with that fabric and I'm going to be making another trip back there just to get some! ;-) Thanks heaps for your uber cool tutorial. Btw, your Xmas tree is perfectly imperfect, just the way it is, and I HEART it. mwah Hx
ReplyDeleteThanks so much!
DeleteI can't believe how expensive it is! Somebody from Perth, Australia just wrote me an email desperately looking for this fabric. She wanted me to list it on ebay so she could buy it. The shipping for that isn't really affordable either.
Oh wow! How dreadful for her. Ikea, here in Brisbane (Queensland), stocks it so if she wants to contact me, by all means pass on my email to her. I'll see what I can do for her. It's aussiebeachgirl@micanip.com - cheers, heather :)
ReplyDeleteOh, I will! Thank you!
DeleteYou're very welcome, J! I don't think I've ever seen anything as beautiful as your light feature...it has the WOW factor a gazillion times over! Hx
DeleteAww thank you so much!
DeleteWhere did you get your chandelier? I love it!!!
ReplyDeleteThanks, the chandelier is from Germany but you can get it in the US too just not for THAT cheap!
DeleteWhere can I get it? Could you give me more informations? It would look just perfect in my dining room!
DeleteI love your website! You are so gifted!!! Thank you for sharing your great ideas!
Well, thank you!
DeleteThe light is a replica of the very expensive Cellula Chandelier. The original is being sold at DESIGN WITHIN REACH for $2,730. Wow, right? I got mine for 80Euros (equals about$65) but they sell some replicas in the US as well, for example for $325 here
http://www.ecrater.com/p/11498364/crystal-linear-pendant-lamp-cellula?gps=1
or for $278.89 at ZGallerie http://www.zgallerie.com/p-1466-linear-strand-crystal-chandelier.aspx
I took the crystals down for Christmas and replaced them with Christmas bulbs.
I hope that helps. Let me know if you have any more questions and HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!!
Thank you so much! Happy Holidays to you and your family!
DeleteFabulous!
ReplyDeleteThank you Karen!
DeleteSimply amazing, an excellent idea and beautifully done. Would you mind if I re blogged this post on my design blogsspot
ReplyDeleteSure and thanks Tanya!
DeleteLove yours! It is so classy! I did something similar, but used a curtain rod and felt decorations. Thanks so much for showing us how you did it. Love your chandelier too. http://allthingsholyhell.wordpress.com/2012/12/04/the-biggest-advent-calendar-on-the-block/
ReplyDeleteI'll have to check it out, Shannon.
DeleteBrilliant! I LOVE it!
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteLove the tree so much I got one. Two Questions: (1) Are you going to leave it up all year, or dismantle it, or what?
ReplyDelete(2) Are you going to add more bling to it, since only the top 1/2 is decorated?
Thanks!
I took it down after Christmas and will put it back up next year.
DeleteAnd it's only half decorated in the one photo. In the rest of the photos it is completely done. Next year I might add something else.
OK, I was able to nab one of 3 remaining Ikea Christmas trees from Amazon a couple weeks ago. It was pricey, at $25, but free shipping and I don't have to obsess about it for the next year. Now I have to figure out what to do with it!
ReplyDeleteAm thinking of sewing on random antique various colored buttons on it.
Couple questions: (1) Have you washed yours at all? My friend said if I wash it, it'll lose its sheen & also it'll fray at the edges. (2) Did you remove your furring strips so you can just store it for the year?
Thankee!
Hi, I have washed cut fabric from Ikea before and it worked just fine. The edges didn't fray a lot.
DeleteAnd yes, I did take the picture apart so I could store it.
The idea with the antique buttons sounds great.
Thanks....I find myself coming back most every day to visit your brilliant site.
DeleteLove your striped curtains, too. Oh, and your dining room chandelier. Will let you know how my project comes along.
I have to post as anonymous as I don't know how to create an account. I live at Lake Tahoe, NV.
